Katsushige Kambara made headlines when in 1998, at the age of 29, he became president of Japan's family-controlled Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. As the youngest person ever to assume such a senior position in what has been a particularly conservative sector, his progress since has been the focus of much attention. Six years into his tenure at the Fukuyama-based company, Kambara is continuing to build a genuinely international yard group with a new range of designs and a fresh approach to business. Focusing primarily on efforts to build bulk carriers, the company has paid close attention to production costs.
