Indian labour unions reacted angrily to a request by shipowners to employ foreign officers on their vessels to compensate for what the owners see as a growing shortage of Indian officers.The unions fear that, if the government grants the request, the move would lead to owners using more non-Indian labour throughout their operations. The secretary-general of the militant National Union of Seafarers of India, Abdulgani Serang, said: "Today, it's the officers, tomorrow it could be the ratings. We will not allow this to happen."
