Crew kidnappings, especially of senior officers, are on the rise in the Malacca Strait.The latest incidents, involving the kidnapping of masters and chief engineers from two tug boats, took place in the northern part of the Strait in Indonesian waters near the port of Belawan. "If unchecked, this will spread like a disease," said Noel Choong, regional manager of the International Maritime Bureau's (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre in Kuala Lumpur, referring to the recent spate of kidnappings for ransom in one of the world's busiest waterways.
