The sinking of the Prestige has put the word 'tankers' back on people's lips; not unlike its sad predecessor Erika. While oil tankers are a derivative business depending on economic growth and its impact on oil consumption, it is also a business affected by public opinion. The impact of public opinion on chartering practices was evident in the months following the sinking of the Erika. The impact of the Prestige is already being felt as the movement to allow only double-hull tankers to carry fuel oil in and out of EU ports gains momentum. The current upward rate trend for tankers reflects this.
