The loss of duty-free, foot and mouth disease, safety legislation, fixed links and low-cost airline competition have all taken their toll of businesses that were in danger of becoming successful. To a greater or lesser extent they reduce in effect with age although fresh concerns over issues such as security, seafarer hours of work legislation and fuel price escalation are never far from the boardroom agenda.
