In mid-November, Royal Caribbean Cruises chairman Richard Fain was asked to compare advance bookings for early 2003 with the position a year earlier. "Anything is better than a year ago," he replied, adding: "Right now, bookings for next year are very strong. At the end of 2001, the fall-out of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington DC cast a dark cloud over the prospects for the business. However, Fain continued, after the initial shock, his three worst-case scenarios failed to materialise. The share of the total number of passengers represented by repeaters did not jump, on-board revenue did not fall and young people did not increase their share of the cruise cake. "Pricing is now almost back to the levels a year ago, which shows how strong this industry is."
