摘要

When British Columbia's three fast ferries are sold at auction on March 24 at Vancouver's waterfront landmark, Canada Place, it will mark the sad end to a journey fraught with government bungling. The province's fast-ferry project was launched in June 1994 and, at the time, appeared to be a brave new scheme that would revitalise the province's shipbuilding industry, create new jobs and international markets for ultra-modern, large, high-speed ferries capable of carrying vehicles. A crown corporation, Catamaran Ferries International, was created, a construction facility built and workmen trained to handle complex shipbuilding jobs such as welding aluminium.
