Casting aside fears of a US-led invasion, Iraqi authorities have begun the development of a ro-ro cargo facility at a currently unused berth at the country's sole Gulf port, Umm Qasr. "They have started dredging alongside Berth 9 for use by ro-ro and geared break-bulk vessels," said a Dubai-based agent. The dredging company is rumoured to be European, but neither its identity nor details of the contract could be confirmed.
