Ten years ago it was like a dream: demand was so high you could refuse repair orders. "You could choose between pork or a steak," says Manuel Quintans, deputy commercial director of Lisnave, a world leader in dry dock capacity. Today the repair market is "like a merry-go-round". When trade is booming there are more repairs done. Quintans says owners come to the yard calling for lower prices because they know that yards in the Middle East quote half the price for repair orders. "If there was a war in Iraq, Middle East yards would receive much less work and that would be the only positive aspect of a war," he says.
