A simmering dispute between Singapore and Malaysia has turned more vocal following a collision in the Singapore Straits between the CMA CGM container ship ANL Indonesia and a Singapore Navy patrol vessel. Amid the human tragedy - three women service personnel lost their lives and the search for another woman crew member of the patrol craft has been given up - angry words have been exchanged between the neighbours. The scene of the mishap has much to do with the souring of tempers and relations. The accident occurred on the night of January 3 in the eastern Singapore Straits close to an island called Pedra Branca by the Singaporeans and Pulau Batu Putih by the Malaysians. Both have laid claim to the island and, although it has been agreed that the dispute should be referred to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the sight of vessels of either country in the waters near the island touches a raw nerve.
