摘要

The Indonesian government is still holding six out of 13 sand-dredging vessels, whose crews were allegedly caught red handed trying to smuggle thousands of tonnes of sand from the waters of Riau to Singapore. The charge was made by the Indonesian Navy, which seized the ships in July last year. Seven vessels, most of them owned by foreign companies, have been released, but ships belonging to local companies are still being detained pending legal procedures. The Indonesian court in Tanjung Pinang, in Riau Island province, released seven dredgers after passing what is described locally as a "lenient" sentence, escaping with fines between Rp30M (S$3,409) and Rp150M. Delivering the verdict, the court said that the seven ships were guilty of violating only their sailing licences. The seven vessels released are Vasco da Gama, Professor Goryunov, Samsung Apollo, Lange Wapper, Alexander von Humboldt, TB Jasmine and TB Olivia.
