The numbers say it all; of the nine Capesize vessels recently sighted waiting or loading at Hammersley Iron's Dampier iron ore terminal, the Ocean Champion was headed for Japan, the Mugungwhah Korea, the Toscanini to Europe, but six vessels - the Thalassini Doxa, Rabin Grace, Cape Mercury, Lowlands Glory, Silver Clipper and Pacific Enterprise - were all destined for China. Most of the world's economy is listless and industrial production is lacklustre, but China continues to forge ahead, underwriting a freight market boom counter to the more general bust. Will the dry market hold out? With the one great caveat that what happens in China is now absolutely central, Peter Kerr-Dineen of London broker Howe Robinson thinks so, although the market is probably already at or near its peak.
