Before the terrorist acts of September 11,2001 on New York City's World Trade towers, the largest fire fatalities in the city's history was the burning and sinking of the excursion steamer General Slocum in the East River on June 15,1904. The Slocum disaster, however, still holds the record as the worst peace-time disaster in the nation's inland waters. Although many news articles from 9-11 also referred to the loss of over 1,000 lives in the Slocum disaster, for most, especially outside of New York, the story is unknown, having long faded into history. O'Donnell's book now brings the story back for readers to rediscover, just in time for Slocum's centenery in 2004.
