The head of Panama's government maritime agency wants the regulatory right to manage the millions it collects from its merchant maritime general directorate for its flag registry operations in 2002 so it can reinvest it in the industry and raise its own standards. "At the moment all of it goes straight to the government. We get to keep a small amount of it," said Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) administrator, Bertilda Garcia Escalona. She declined to reveal how much the government gave back to the AMP for its operating budget. "I'd rather not say how much we get, but we do have the capacity to go back to the government, via the parliament, and ask for more if we need it," she said. "I wouldn't say I'm happy with what we get, but we accept what we have."
