Although ship agency relies heavily on the expertise of the local people and tradition, the additional benefits of a good web-based logistics system are without doubt the way forward for agents. Earlier this year Multiport, the world's largest network of independent ship agents, launched its Internet-based system ShipTrak at its 25th anniversary reception in New York. ShipTrak enables Multiport's members to offer its principals a centrally controlled, bespoke system for the management of shipping on a regional or global basis. The system also provides central accounting facilities for the management and funding of vessel disbursements.
