Vlcctrades east and west of the Middle East Gulf (MEG) have again experienced varying fortunes. Last week's laggards―voyages to the Far East― recorded an increase in earnings of over 40% to average $23,000/day. Voyages to the West made only a modest improvement, gaining just two per cent to reach nearly $26,000/day. Spot chartering levels, with over 40 fixtures concluded last week, were significantly higher than a typical week, when an average of 25-30 fixtures may be expected, Consequently, VLCC availability over the next 30 days has been cut markedly, from 80 to 57 vessels. The short-term outlook for VLCC earnings depends on the extent to which the Opec quota cut will reduce the number of cargoes, and whether increased Iraqi shipments will make up the deficit.
