China's burgeoning growth is driving global demand, jacking up freight rates, sending cargo volumes soaring at home and sparking off a frenzy of port expansion, fleet additions and shipyard constructions. Riding on the back of strong economic growth stretching from the Changjiang (Yangtze) river delta in southern China to the area around the Bohai Gulf and the newly-opened centres in southwest and west China and booming southern China, the coastal ports are brimming with cargo. SARS did lurk in some major provinces and cities for a few months last March, restraining the momentum of growth, but the pace has now picked up again.
