Frontline, the world's largest listed tanker company, has confirmed it is to split into a vessel operating group and a vessel owning entity.The logic is to cater for two different kinds of investor: those that prefer lower risk would look at the shipowning company as their choice, while those accepting a higher risk would buy into the operating company. Directors say the new setup could be in place before Christmas, but most likely it will be before the end of January 2004. The plan calls the sale of 47 tankers, VLCCs and Suezmaxesto a new group called Ship Finance, which would raise bank loans and issue senior notes to acquire the ships that would be owned by its shipowning subsidiaries. It could later be floated on the US equity markets.
