摘要

An index that charts how many Americans plan to buy a new car in the next six months has been falling almost weekly for quite some time. It has now reached its lowest level since 1993, says Jarle Sjo, shipping analyst at First Securities in Oslo. "A big question is for how long the currently strong market in the US will last," he noted. "Low-cost finance and even zero finance has boosted sales figures so far, but this may now come to an end." The US dollar has lost ground against a basket of currencies since last year, and this will eventually hurt producers in Asia. "It could take two to three years before Asian exports feel the effect: in 1984-85 the dollar was very strong but the effect started being felt 1987-88," Sjo continued. But once it took hold, that effect was quite substantial: the market share of imported vehicles fell to 10% from 27% between 1988 and 1996.
