Shipdesk's recent demise and last week's staff cuts at MaritimeDirect illustrate the intrinsic insecurity of venture capital-backed maritime dot-com sites, according to the Baltic Exchange's development manager Mike Elsom. "It shows how insecure these sites can be. Venture capitalists are in a position to pull the plug whenever they like and can walk away - then the dot-com folds," he told Fairplay. "Venture capitalists are clearly looking for a return and that has to filter through to how the dot-com is going to generate revenue. This is an additional set of pressures that the Baltic does not have."
