The future for Polish seafarers is in the balance. It is estimated that there are about 27,000 Poles at sea, about two per cent of the world total. They tend to be well educated and experienced and there are many officers among them. The manning companies, which are members of the Association of Polish Marine Agents and Ship-owners' Representatives (APMAR), cover 11,000 Polish seafarers working on foreign vessels.
