To help guide potential investors into the right sectors of shipping, a snap-shot of activity in each of the major trades can be gained by this relatively simple calculation. By dividing the total in-service fleet of ships, either in DWT or TEU in the case of container ships, by the current order backlog, a percentage figure can be calculated giving the percentage of the existing fleet on order. For the purposes of this article it will be called 'The Ratio'.
