The Baltic Exchange could become a clearing house for on-line trade in forward freight agreements (FFAs) once its electronic trading platform, due for launch in July 2001, is up and running. "The Baltic is interested in registering these contracts, looking at the exposure and netting off the exposure on a monthly basis, and possibly providing a guarantee of settlement," chief executive Jim Buckley told Fairplay. "This raises questions about insurance and exposure, so we're going to take it one step at a time."
