The use of barges and ferries to carry freight between ports has become imperative as international trade increases and container ships expand in size, giving the competitive edge to the largest ports, such as New York and Long Beach, US officials and maritime executives said at a May 23 House hearing devoted to the problem of port and maritime congestion. More transits by ship, they said, will also reduce pollution on the interstate highway system, which carries most of the containerised cargo moving inland from US ports and has little room to grow.
