Hyundai Merchant Marine has announced that it has ordered a 5,700 TEU container ship from sister shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries. It is the first order to come direct from the South Korean owner since the Asian economic crisis of late 1998. HMM says it has secured $67M from foreign financial institutions to finance the deal. The ship will be 275 m long, 40 m wide and will have a service speed of 25.6 kt. It will be delivered at the first quarter of 2003. HMM also intends to order two 4,700 TEU ships during the second half this year.
