Port privatisation in Chile has cut business for ship agents, says one of the South American West Coast's major players. Ian Taylor y Compania executive director Roger Barlow says operators at Chile's privatised ports are supplying their own stevedores, usually provided by ships' agents as part of ancillary port services. "We are still able to use public piers at most of the [privatised] ports that our ships call at... so we can still provide a service without being affected," Barlow says. However, he believes the trend towards port consolidation will continue.
