Carriers serving the Puerto Rican liner trades have joined seafarers in condemning Puerto Rico's attempts to escape from the protectionist US maritime trade law, the Jones Act. A representative from the largest shipping line serving the Puerto Rican trades, Navieras NPR, told a Puerto Rican Senate commission hearing that the Jones Act guaranteed Puerto Rico a good liner service and frequency. But Navieras' senior vice president and general counsel, Mario Escudero, criticised the senators before whom he appeared on June 12 as naive and ill informed on shipping issues. "They listened to me but they didn't want to hear," he said.
