Spanish unions have accepted a proposal to merge Astilleros Espanoles (AESA) and military shipbuilder Bazan, a spokesman for government agency Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industrials (Sepi) told Fairplay last week. The next step is further discussions to plan the actual mechanics of the merger, and the integration is hoped to be complete by the end of the year. A Sepi discussion paper sent to unions last month disclosed that the yards still forming part of AESA and those acquired late last year by the agency lost over Pta30Bn ($177.6M) last year, and are expected to lose another Pta98.6Bn ($580.7M) over the next five years. However, the document pointed out that the merger would lead to an accumulated profit of Pta89.8Bn ($528.9M) by the end of 2004.
