The marriage between ECT Rotterdam and Trieste Port Authority, celebrated in March 1998 with the solemnising of the 30-year concession to operate Trieste's Molo VII container terminal, was never consummated with much passion. So when the Dutch partner announced the irrevocable breakdown of the union, few were really surprised. In the weeks before the bubble burst, both sides tried to reassure the community that they had solved their problems amicably. As recently as mid-January, ECT president Carel van den Driest and Trieste chairman Maurizio Maresca made a public declaration of their mutual commitment to meeting each other's needs. But it was all fantasy. The news of the separation broke 20 days later.
