The newbuilding market is cooling down a little following the frantic ac tivity of the past month. This has come about because few yards are now looking for contracts and most now have forward positions of two years or more. If offers are made, prices are higher than last done. On the other hand, owners are unwilling to commit because prices are on the rise, leading to a stalemate. South Korean yards in particular are now mainly targeting higher value work, following statements at the end of 1999 to concentrate on this type of work rather than low-margin, volume production contracts. With the order book in most sectors looking full, few owners will be looking to place speculative orders, as this would damage the recovery of freight rates experienced of late, both in the wet and dry markets.
