A lang is not exactly wilting under the glare of critical scrutiny from both international and national agencies, but realisation is slowly dawning on ship breakers that things cannot continue the way they have been for ever. The 90-odd ship breakers are grouped under two organisations, the Bhavnagar-based Gujrarat Shipbreakers' Association and the Mumbai-based All India Iron Steel Scrap and Shipbreakers' Association. They are now talking of "pooling resources" when at one time they had even refused to acknowledge that they share a responsibility for the ugly side of Alang.
