Lack of willing capital is one of the factors that could lead to a shortage of sub-Panamax container ships, says Howe Robinson in its most recent quarterly review, released last week. This year, post-Panamax deliveries will comprise nearly half the entire container ship delivery programme in capacity terms. In 2001, this will rise to a phenomenal 72 per cent of the delivery programme. Meanwhile sub-Panamax deliveries will be less impressive. The report notes a "very real concern" that sub-Panamax deliveries will be insufficient to satisfy demand on the North/ South and feeder trades. The situation persists in 2002, with only 36 sub-Panamax ships on order. "In past years," says the report, "such a lack of forward orders at this stage might not have been considered as critical. However, the entire ordering environment has been changed and the combination of a lack of willing investment capital and a severe shortage of berths before 2003 suggests that the total order book for 2002 might not exceed 100 vessels."
