The increasing availability of spot beam satellites and improved communications technology is expected to encourage the use of VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) communications in the marine sector. In a presentation to the recent London conference on Communications and IT in Shipping, Capt Lars Brodje of the Swedish consultancy Satpaol predicted that the advantages of the new VSAT services are likely to take business away from Inmarsat. This could, he believes, prevent Inmarsat-B from ever achieving the same market share as Inmarsat-A.
