Australia's 48 state-controlled ports want to be privatised. They claim it will improve productivity, remove political interference, inject capital and open up competition within ports. The ports' body, the Association of Australian Ports and Marine Authorities (AAPMA), says state governments won't invest in much-needed upgrades, preferring to use ports as "cash cows".
