Last week's decision by Iraq to remove 2.3M barrels per day of crude from an already nervous oil market was expected to have a dire effect. The prevailing high prices supposedly indicated a tight supply situation. In reality, completely the opposite effect occurred and crude prices actually dropped. Some observers, the International Energy Agency (IEA) included, suggest that the crude market may be better supplied and more evenly balanced than previously thought.
