During 1993, it was noted in the London area that there had been more fires in churches than usual to the point where it was giving concern to some of the principal officers of the Brigade. As the Fire Safety Officer responsible for a team of inspecting officers and also the Fire Investigation Unit, it fell on me to establish the cause and take some sort of action to reduce the number of fires. As soon as I started to make enquiries, studied fire investigation reports, talked to the denominational insurers and the police, my task seemed to grow and grow.
