摘要

On Thursday 11th April 1996, in the late afternoon, fire broke out within the suspended ceiling of the Arrivals Hall at Duesseldorf International Airport. Within half an hour the fire had spread rapidly along cable and air-conditioning ducting, resulting in the smoke-logging of two thirds of the terminal building. The cause of this fire, the worst to affect a European airport not involving an aircrash, is thought to have been started by welding work on a suspended roadway above the Arrivals Hall. Sixteen people died in this disaster and more than 60 were seriously injured. The fire took six hours to bring under control, involving at least 150 firefighters. The building was severely damaged and is now known to be contaminated by soot containing significant amounts of dioxin. The human and financial cost of this disaster is currently not known. This short report has been put together from information publicly available through the media. Accurate details will have to await the publication of the official report.
