The operating mechanism of a variety of modern switch units was examined, and controlled burning tests were carried out on three types of unit to determine how the mechanism degraded during the course of a fire. A resin-casting method was then used which enabled both the state of the switch prior to the fire and changes which occurred during the fire to be determined. Determining whether a switch was ON or OFF at the time of a fire can often be a very important part of a fire investigation. It may be necessary to determine whether a switched socket or circuit switch feeding an appliance was ON at the time of the fire, or to check the state of a light switch to corroborate a witness's story.
