In this country of immense beauty and stark social contradictions locked, barred and bolted places of work are a fact of life. The idea is to try to protect business and homeowners, their employees and domestic staff, their stock and their property from the high daily incidence of armed robbery, housebreaking, pilfering and hijacking that makes overseas investors think twice about South Africa. A contributing factor is that most insurance companies simply refuse cover on policies failing to comply with an array of their own strictly specified security requirements.
