I read your May issue with great interest, particularly Chief Daniels' article "American firefighter training must address safety threats." In his article, Chief Daniels speaks of stress and ova-exertion as one of the major factors in American firefighter deaths and attributes this to a lack of physical conditioning. I have been a firefighter for the last ten years and have seen this over-exertion phenomenon. However, I believe Chief Daniels has misinterpreted the causes. As a Fire Service manager, Chief Daniels is speaking as a manager and is incorrectly placing responsibility on the firefighters when, in fact, this is a managerial problem.
