Alkaline metal has found a number of applications in industries and in research area. Fires of lithium and sodium can be serious problems since lithium and sodium are reactive chemically with majority of the substances which are in general use as firefighting media. Thus information on behavior and extinguishment of lithium and sodium fires is necessary for fire departments which become involved with fires of lithium and sodium. In order to get information needed for dealing with alkaline metal fires, an experimental study on extinction of lithium and sodium fires was done. Perlite, AC-Lite, ABC powder, Metalex, and water were applied. Water was not appropriate for sodium and lithium fires. Though perlight was effective to sodium fire, perlight was not appropriate to lithium fire. Chemical reactivity of sodium and lithium to firefighting media was different.%公設消防機関がリチウム、ナトリウムの火災に対処する際に参考にするための情報を得るために、小 規模な火災実験を行った。過去の知見と同様に、水は、リチウムとナトリウムに対する消火手段として 不適当であった。パーライトのように、ナトリウムに対しては使用可能であっても、リチウムに対して は不適当となることもあった。ナトリウムに有効な消火手段が、リチウムにも有効とは限らなかった。
