%In order to contribute to the improvement of health and safety management for firefighters, an analysis of hazardous substances in laundry wastewater of fire protective suits after long-term use was performed. Among sixteen substances analyzed, only formaldehyde has a safety standard for textile products. The analysis results showed that the level of formaldehyde was lower than the safety standard. For acetaldehyde, the health effect was speculated to be small, by comparison of the analysis results with a guideline value of indoor concentration. For asbestos, Cu, Cr, CN, As, Cd, Pb, total-Hg, F, Cl, SO_4~(2-), and NO_3", the analysis results were compared with effluent standards and/or drinking-water standards. All the data were found to be lower than the standard values, except for Pb which showed approximately four times greater than the effluent standard. With these standards based on oral toxicity studies, however, it is difficult to analogize the dermal toxicity associated with clothing. For lithium, there is no standard value available. All the samples analyzed in the present study showed the lithium level lower than the detection limit. For Ni, the only available standard is based on the inhalation toxicity study for suspended powders. The present analysis results should be further evaluated by experts in toxicology.
