Business history is filled with examples of the idea that if you build a better mousetrap, people will beat a path to your door. Individuals often seize success by taking an existing product or service and making it better. That was the strategy followed by Marine Cross Country, a Greenville, S.C.-based company that hauls pleasure boats from coast to coast. Company founders believed they could be successful by offering exceptional service in an industry dominated by "mom and pop" players. They also believed they could take advantage of a provision in a federal transportation law to provide increased capacity for their customers and increased profit for themselves. From its launch in 1994, the company has grown to about $4.5 million in sales. Its leased 22 Kenworth trucks and stinger-steered trailers transport boats for some of the top names in the pleasure craft industry including Sea Ray, Bayliner, Chaparral, Correct Craft Malibu, Baja, Boston Whaler and Triton.
