Corrugated packaging will see a promising next couple of years. Specifically, the segment is forecasted to grow by an average of more than 4 percent annually through 2019, according to Smithers Pira. By that time, the corrugated packaging sector will consist of more than 115 million tons of material, valued at $176 billion. Like most any area of the packaging realm, there are many factors contributing to the growth of corrugated packaging. Smithers Pira hones in on the top four: Environmental Issues-Increasingly demanding environmental and sustainable requirements have spurred the creation of a number of innovative packaging designs as well as reductions in the paper quantities that is used in those packs. And the thought of and concern for sustainability in the minds of both consumers and brand owners is one that isn't going away. That's led to more long term shifts, like producers investing in environmental protection, energy optimization programs, reduced water consumption, and improved logistics and transportation.
