In 18 years and more than 6,000 hours of flying in the United States Air Force, I picked up a few expressions that I incorporated into my operating routine. I flew some of the smallest and largest aircraft, including the C-12, T-37, C-5 and T-6. I was at least an instructor in every aircraft I've flown. Somehow, the list keeps expanding, although I must admit not as much in the latter years. Many of you will be familiar with some of the more popular thoughts. I call this list of expressions my Pilot Proverbs. Some I picked up as a young pilot trying to emulate those more experienced than I. Some I learned at the club, telling stories over a frosty beverage. Some of these were learned the hard way, either by me or by someone else. Some are humorous—but only after they become memories and you live to tell about it. Currency does not equal proficiency. Currency keeps the DO satisfied and proficiency keeps the pilot satisfied.
