Even though the details of the mishap are still a little confusing, it does seem that the Nantucket deployment of a Cirrus SR20's whole-airplane parachute system was the first in which a nonin-strument-rated pilot pulled the handle after continuing VFR into IMC. Continued visual flight into IMC is one of the leading causes of fatal accidents in light airplanes. According to the NTSB's preliminary report, the pilot took off from Westchester County Airport under visual flight rules bound for the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. According to the report, the VFR-rated pilot of the SR20 contacted the Nan-tucket tower controller, but before he could land, a fog bank rolled in. Again, according to the report, the pilot apparently asked the controller for the ILS and was then switched over to Cape Approach, presumably for vectors for the approach. Shortly thereafter, the pilot deployed the airframe chute.
