For those pilots lucky enough to be flying around with Nexrad in the cockpit, there's no need to go into how cool it is. So cool, in fact, that lightning detection has lost some of its luster. But maybe not for long. At AirVenture Avidyne introduced the latest wrinkle on lightning detection, its TWX670 Tactical Weather Detection System, which combines the realtime detection capability of sferics with the intuitive display of radar. The display is created by generating a real-time map of color-coded grids of lightning activity, which correspond very closely to the convective activity of a storm.rnThe system is optimized for storms within 25 miles of the airplane. Avidyne says that the short-range capability is only possible through improved installation calibration techniques, better noise filtering, advanced signal processing and by using "geostabilized" data to take airplane maneuvering into account.
