Gulfstream Aerospace has officially opened the first phase of its new service center on the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Located on the southwest side of the field, the new center includes a 136,200-square-foot hangar that can accommodate 18 large Gulfstream jets; it will be joined next year by another facility of similar size, thus enabling the company to have 36 of its biggest airplanes in for service. Relatively minor work has been and will continue to be done on the ramp. When the second phase is completed, Gulfstream will close the old service facility on the northeast side of the airport. As part of a $400-million long-range expansion, Gulfstream is also building a new manufacturing facility near the existing plant on the northeast side of the airport.
