摘要

While modern winglets trace their history back to NASA research conducted more than four decades ago, rising fuel costs have driven interest in the technology higher than ever in recent years. Thus enters the 737 split-scimitar winglet from Aviation Partners Boeing in Seattle, which takes the company's successful blended winglets and adds a ventral fin along with high-performance scimitar tips. Split-scimitar winglets help to lower drag by reducing wingtip vortices - the trails of swirling air created at the wingtip as air in the high-pressure area below the wing moves to the low-pressure area above the wing - which now have two surfaces as opposed to one. While the majority of the performance enhancement comes from the top portion of the winglet, the new ventral fin amplifies the effect, allowing jets to fly farther on less fuel. (By the way, a "scimitar" is a curved sword that traces its use at least back to the Ottoman Empire.).
