You may think enhanced vision systems (EVS) are only for advanced commercial and business aircraft. Well, guess again. A company called Astronics Max-Viz has launched a version of its infrared EVS called X1. The system effectively allows the pilot to see in obscured or darkened conditions, which otherwise hide obstacles and other features on the ground, whether fixed or temporary. The system is particularly useful for pilots who operate in and out of unimproved airstrips, which can have camouflaged animals and other hazards on the runways.
